The first morning saliva pH of a healthy person should be between 7.2 and 7.4. The lower you go on the pH scale the more acid you are, which means the more deficient you are in alkalizing minerals. A pH range from 7.0 to 6.5 is slightly acid; 6.5 to 5.5 is mildly acid; and 5.5 to 4.5 is severely acid.

According to Robert Barefoot and Carl Reich, authors of The Calcium Factor: The Scientific Secret of Health and Youth, most infants have a pH of 7.5 while more than one-half of the adult population has a saliva pH of 6.5 or lower. Cancer patients usually have a saliva pH of 4.5, especially in the advanced stages. Their research shows that virtually all degenerative diseases, including cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, kidney and gall stones, and tooth decay, are associated with excess acidity in the body.

The most accurate way to test your saliva pH is to measure it first thing in the morning, even before drinking water or brushing your teeth. You can also test it at other times, but wait at least 2 hours after drinking or eating. To test, fill your mouth with saliva, stir with your tongue, and then swallow. Do this several times to help ensure that your saliva is clean. Fill your mouth with saliva and put some saliva onto a small strip of pH paper.

When measuring your first morning saliva pH, if your body’s tissues and fluids are alkaline and your buffering capacity is high, the pH paper should turn dark green, indicating an overall internal environment pH of approximately 7.2. If it is below 7.0, your tributaries are acid, indicating that your alkaline minerals and oxygen levels are low—the more acid, the greater the depletion. This is a value that does not change much from day to day, that is, until you make a concerted effort to clean up the acids and bring ecological balance back to your internal tributaries.
